The mind creates both the beauty we long for and the pain we try to outrun. It takes courage to face all of it. That courage is a skill, and like all skills, it can be learned. My work is an invitation to begin.
A meditation on intrusive thoughts and the unsettling absurdity of their uncontrollable nature
Displayed on pedestal 2020
This piece transforms a familiar novelty into a reflection on how our minds can generate deeply distorted, intrusive and negative messages with or without our consent. Placed on a pedestal, the H8 Ball invites viewers to confront the bizarre and often harsh statements that intrusive thoughts can deliver. Each phrase is an unfiltered burst of self-doubt, turning a lighthearted object into a tool for serious introspection and reflection.
In the form of a classic Magic 8 Ball, the piece uses its familiar shape to reveal how common and yet unsettling these intrusive thoughts are. By externalising these distorted messages, it encourages viewers to recognise and question them rather than accept them.
Inside the ball and beyond the violent and absurd messaging lies a deeper question: what happens when these thoughts grow beyond our ability to rationalise them?
